Wendland, HRG’s vice president, strategic relations, will be dissecting the opportunity at independent pharmacies by debunking five myths: independent pharmacies are extinct; the entire channel delivers little return; OTC categories don’t perform well; self-care consumers don’t shop there; and it’s impossible to reach the stores in this channel.
Wendland said, “Throughout my career I have seen much confusion surrounding independent pharmacy and its viability as a channel for OTCs. Suppliers that have dedicated resources to this channel have recognized the value of the relationship between these pharmacists and their patients and the immeasurable influence pharmacists have when consulting with and recommending patients OTC healthcare products. In fact, in our recent review of items launched in 2017, of those that show the greatest potential at independent pharmacies, 10 of the top 15 are OTCs.”
