Since 2009, all fifty states have allowed pharmacists to administer select vaccines to patients. This sensible revision to healthcare policy continues to positively impact the communities served by independent pharmacies, and offer an ongoing opportunity for pharmacists to develop stronger relationships with patients.

Patients wishing to get vaccines have options, of course – they can visit a doctor’s office, or drop-in to a large chain pharmacy – but community pharmacies are uniquely positioned to serve these patients. Your pharmacy’s vaccination program offers convenience unmatched by physician’s offices, as no appointments are necessary. Patients will also likely enjoy shorter wait times and more attentive service in your pharmacy than they might at your competitors’. These key advantages can help you attract new and existing patients.Offer vaccinations

Your close relationship to your community also positions you to do more than simply offer vaccines. You can become a vaccine resource center. Create awareness materials relating to the vaccines you offer, and share them at community health fairs or in your store. Offer an informational seminar for the public, or work with local universities, corporations, or senior living facilities to organize vaccine clinics on-site at their locations. Use your website and social media to share information and answer questions relating to your vaccine services. Not only will you further establish your expertise and commitment to patient care, it’s a great opportunity to attract new patients to your pharmacy who seek counsel and service. Offering vaccines is a proactive way to engage and connect with your community.
