2020 Independent Pharmacy Research Study

In 2012, HRG released the groundbreaking study, Independent Pharmacy Shoppers: Who, What, and Why?. In addition to getting the perspective of independent pharmacists on their business and shoppers, independent pharmacy customers were surveyed. The subsequent report identified shopper behavior, purchase preferences and practices, and areas where engagement could be enhanced.

Eight years later, the ever-changing retail landscape, e-commerce influences, wellness and self-care trends, and changing demographics have affected independent pharmacies as much as their chain counterparts. HRG is embarking on new market research, the 2020 Independent Pharmacy Research Study, to learn how the channel and its shoppers have changed. The study is looking at:

  • How healthy are independent pharmacies today?
  • Who shops at independent pharmacies in 2020?
  • Is innovation bringing in a new set of shoppers?

  • Which categories are performing well?
  • What are the front-end growth trends?
  • How are stores using services and technology to differentiate?
  • Who is the greatest threat to independent pharmacies today?

Manufacturers, drug wholesalers, retailers, trade publications, and industry organizations will all find value in understanding who the independent pharmacy shopper is today. 

Information will be collected nationally from three primary sources:

  1. Field research/customer intercepts
  2. Point-of-sale scan data
  3. Survey of independent pharmacists

The study is scheduled to be published by the end of the year.
